Grey Gardens

Yesterday I watched the Grey Gardens documentary and today I watched the, just released, HBO movie. I am fascinated and feel completely sad for those two women. In case you aren't familiar, Edith Beale was Jacqueline Kennedy's aunt and little Edie was her first cousin. These two women lived alone at Grey Gardens, their country home in East Hampton, in seclusion from the outside world for years. It's amazing that Jackie Kennedy's own family could live this way and no one really ever intervened. Their once beautiful home had become deplorable and they lived amongst raccoons, tons of cats and piles of garbage in (LSD induced) harmony. lol

I wonder if they would make sense to people who were drunk or stoned. Hmm...

Some may call these two eccentric, but it's apparent they both suffer from some form of mental illness, probably schizophrenia. My guess is that they only had eachother for so long that they drove eachother crazy...literally. No offense, but these two bitches are crazier than Cooter Brown with a crack pipe. I'm talking bat-shit crazy.

The tragedy of the documentary and movie lies with little Edie, who left her hopes and dreams in New York, to care for her lonely mother and she never left. Edith obviously guilted Edie into caring for her and therefore, Edie gave in and never married or lived the life she'd always wanted. The love and resentment little Edie has for her mother is apparent, however sometimes it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. I suppose that is what happens when you only ever have one person in your life.

Edith was a well known singer in her time and little Edie always wanted to be an actress or dancer. It's clearly evident that the both of them lived completely in their pasts and with much regret of lost loves, opportunities and dreams. I believe they were too frightened of what the future may hold that they clung to the past and allowed everything around them fall to pieces, including themselves. It's very sad.

Little Edie suffered from alopecia from a young age, hence the scarves on her head. I couldn't help but wonder why no one ever bought her a nice wig. They had an occasional visitor here and there, but even the visitors seemed uncomfortable in the home and in their presence. It's like watching a train wreck. You can't take your eyes away, no matter how bad it is.

Crazy or not, these two women are fascinating to watch. They are so detached from reality and you can't help but feel a little more sane every minute you watch. It's quite the ego booster. Drew Barrymore did a fantastic job playing Little Edie. Sometimes I'd forget it was her because she perfected her speech, idiosyncrasies and movements. The most heartbreaking part of the movie for me was when Edie attended the premiere of the documentary, and somewhere in her sick mind she finally felt like she got a big Hollywood break and was a star. They never got it. It's all very sad, you understand. (As Edie would say) It's a good movie and documentary.

Here is a small piece from the documentary. This should sum up these two fairly well.

Grounded Until Further Notice

Wrigley used his GPS and found his way home. After many hugs and kisses, he is now grounded until he learns his lesson. He is also forbidden to hang out with the tramp down the street...bad influence. He is slightly annoyed with us, but it's all in his best interests you see.

TRICKERY!

Is it just me, or are fake breasts now the norm? Everywhere I look, it's fake boobies all around. Big knockers apparently aren't just for the rich and famous anymore. Everyone has them, from nurses I work with, to 60 year old patients. Is it so bad to have real breasts that actually move and change shape with different positions? Do men not find this attractive anymore? Seriously? I am asking because I need to know. Do you men out there not like anything that is REAL?!!!!! I have had 4 children, ok? My breasts look really good, I have to say...HOWEVER....a-hem.....I am real, 100%. I also have laugh lines and crows feet because I guess I smiled too much in the 80's. Damnit! This plastic surgery nonsense is out of hand. No one is perfect, especially not moi. Thank goodness my husband loves the real Christy and not some recontructed, Stepford wife, version of myself. But let me say, from the trends I am seeing, men can be completely shallow creatures. Are they the reason these woman flock to the OR to be cut open and readjusted? What are we now, cars? Pfft! Newsflash to all you men out there. Us REAL ladies don't look like those chicks on the covers of magazines. You have been fooled. Now, back to regularly scheduled programming. Grrrr!

I can understand if you are 25 and your breasts look like mosquito bites or you've had recontructive surgery, but why must a woman who is less than a size 'D' feel they need implants? Do these woman not understand how much of a complex that gives the rest of us 'real' folk? I suspect in 20 years no one will be completely 'real' at this rate. Children will be genetically perfect before they are concieved, no one will sport a little pooch in the mid-section, small breasts will be a thing of the past, everyone's teeth will be perfectly straight and gleaming white...acne?! What is acne? People will be having skin transplants too! What's next....micro chips to make our brains all operate the same. Na-Nu, Na-Nu. Shit! What's wrong with just being yourself? All of this because men think it's sexy? LMAO Is this all one big joke? Ashton Kutcher...where are you?

I don't want to compete. I just want to be me and feel good about that. All of these magazine covers, plastic surgery ads, super models can go straight to HELL. I am not ever getting a boob job, ever. I am going to live happily ever after with boobs that don't stand at perfect attention and never move, lines that show I have smiled a time or two and a little pooch in my tummy! Screw you Dr. 90210, and your tanned and perfecttly frozen face!

NOT AGAIN!

DAMNIT! My dog is missing again! I got home from work to be informed that it is thought he went missing last night before we went to bed. He is a beagle and if he catches a scent he's out like Ryan Seacrest. We picked up a stray a while back until we found it's owner and the stray taught our dog how to open our front door. Pfft. Do you see what you have done?! Thanks for nothing doggy, and the kids for not paying better attention! NOW I am going sick with worry and am wondering if I will ever see him again. :( There is no telling where he is by now. The last time he did this we found him miles away hiding in a pile of brush. It was a miracle we found him and I doubt that will happen again. I am just worried sick! What if he can't find his way home? What if a stranger snatches him up or worse!!!! How does someone deal with this? How will I sleep knowing he's out there somewhere? UGH! If he doesn't return home in 3 days I'll need therapy.

Birthdays and Paranoia

My oldest son turns 15 today, which in turn makes me feel old. Now I know why some people choose to keep having babies, because it keeps them young. Not that I am old, I had Skyler pretty young, you do the math. Regardless, I can't help but remember when I was a mere 15 and thought I knew everything about the world. Har, Har, Har, how ignorant I was...

At 15, me and my friends would hide behind the garage and smoke cigarettes and sneak out of the house to meet boys! We thought we were so cool. As the years went by, things became less innocent and took a turn for the worse. When I look back now, I was just a little girl trying to do grown up (and very illegal!) things. We would attend parties at complete strangers houses, get in cars with random guys, take vacations and venture on the beach alone at night, probably in mini skirts with lots of make-up on! You'd think we were just asking for it huh? Lucikly no one I knew was raped or kidnapped (or worse), but we all put ourselves in danger. It's amazing that I'm able to sit here today and type this with all the stupid things I have done. I experimented with drugs and drank (A LOT) of alcohol too. What was more scary was that I had a license and a deadly weapon to drive around. I was once in a wreck so horrible that I had to sit in the middle of a room, terrified, while a 12 person jury eyeballed me with contempt and judgement. My point... I was such an idiot!

My son is having a small party with his friends this weekend, under our supervision of course, but he's also venturing out with them....alone for a while. I think back to how rebellious I was, then I look at my son and it freaks me out. I internally panicked. "NO POT SMOKING! NO GIRLS and NO ALCOHOL! And I will know if you're stoned!" lol Yes, I am projecting my own misdeeds onto my very sheltered and innocent honor roll student. I need to learn to loosen the reins a bit and let him have a little more freedom. I admit that I am protective, HELLO it's me! I know what kids do because I was one of them and I was very good at doing very bad things. These days, it's much worse than it was then and that scares me to death. Kids are cutting theirselves for goodness sake and having sex at 12 and 13!!! I know I was young, but 12?! INSANITY!

My youngest son, Aidan, who is 6, had a surprise visit from a little girl in his kindergarten class the other day and when he saw her his face turned beat red and his smile was as big as Texas. He was blushing, I tell you! I think he may be in love with this little girl and she is BOSSY too! "Come with me Aidan!" "Let's do this Aidan." "I want to play this game Aidan!" ...and he followed her around the house like a little puppy on a leash. I was about to intervene when her mom finally showed up. Oy! Already?!

I am not prepared for this. I am not ready for my 'little' boy to be driving a car, dating girls and experimenting with God knows what. This teenage business is giving me an ulcer. Regardless, he is a mature kid and I am proud of him for not acting like a complete hooligan. Can't say I was as smart as he is, but I only hope and pray he makes the right decisions when he's placed in certain circumstances. Happy 15th Birthday to my Skyler.

Lord give me strength to endure the next several years....

Back At Square One

My first day on the orthopedic unit went well. I don't know what I was so worried about. Afterall, surgery is surgery and if I know ANYTHING, it's surgery patients. What I don't know well is how to chart on a hundred different pieces of paper. I think I filled out an entire edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. I hate the charting. There are entirely too many columns and spaces about as small as the tip of a pen. I need to use a magnifying glass just to be able to read some of that crap. What is this, ye olden charting? Why don't we just break out some rocks and chizel the vitals signs into them? Sigh. I know, it's only the first day, but some moments felt like my first day EVER!

I felt a bit clumsy and foolish at times. I kept getting lost and because the unit is a mirror image of itself, it was like groundhog's day over and over again. 'Hmmm, I think I've been here before'. (scratching chin) Every door has a code and every code is different. That is just so cruel to a new employee! Not only was I walking
in circles, but I somehow lost the ability to also open doors. Once I couldn't remember the code to the elevator, so I just said screw it and took 6 flights of stairs. I....could....barely....(huff-puff-puff) breathe.

Despite the Flinstone charting system, the patient's rooms are nicer than some hotel rooms I've been in. I had to double check the bathrooms to make sure there wasn't a jacuzzi and big fluffy bathrobes inside. They also have room service which is a fancy way of saying....you can actually pick your hospital food and have it sent when you're ready. A nice touch, nontheless. It's the little things that matter so much. For instance, you just place your cup under the ice despenser and voila, ice. No cup crushing buttons to press, just ice. Same with the water....ooooohhhh, ahhhhh! It's a miracle, or a sensor, but it feels like a miracle when you are trying to multi-task. :)

I left work feeling a little (a lot) frazzled, but oh well. I'll learn and hopefully each time I leave, my head will be held a little higher. By the way, always look up when you hear loud car horns. Mkay?

Dem Bones!

I start on the floor on the morrow at 0630. I thought I was going to be on Neuro, but instead will be on Ortho. I know nothing about bones, except for their names and where they are. Oh and I also remember that if someone has a hip fx they have to keep their legs abducted. Yep. That's about it. I'm nervous. I'll only have two days worth of orientation on each unit, which is less than I originally thought, but closer to my making the big bucks, so I'm not complaining.

I will have to be up at at least 0430 and leave home by 0530, which for me is DAMN EARLY! Well, here I go....jumping in with both feet, or er, metatarsals and phalanges that is!

Humiliation Central

Imagine this scenario: You are at a Twilight book signing and get trampled on. Your reward? To go on the Tyra Banks show and have a chance to win some awesome Twilight memorabilia, but there is a catch.... you must stick your face into some pies and retrieve bats, without using your hands. Whoever gets the most bats (of the 3 girls) wins. Simple enough, right? Wrong! You have to completely humiliate yourself IN FRONT OF THESE TWO PEOPLE:

I would rather strip naked in front of my mother in law.

Ick

I have discovered that feeling indifferent is just as uncomfortable as feeling something substantial.

It's like beating a dead horse because you want the dead horse to wake up. There always comes a point when you get tired and you realize it's a pointless action. Suddenly, you wondered why you ever began at all. The horse is still dead, and all you are is drained. This doesn't seem fair. I am just going to let the dead horse lie.

Hanging With the Little People

There was a neuro surgeon in one of my "welcome to new hospital" classes today. (Yes, I'm still doing that malarkey). We had to go around the room and tell about ourselves, which is my most favorite part of orientation, might I add. (Eye roll). It went a little something like this...

"My name is Jane and I'll be in housekeeping."

"Hello, my name is John Doe and I'll be working in medical records."

"Hi, I'm Dave and will be a patient care technician in TCU."

"Hello, my name is Christy, I'm an RN and will be in the Neuro, Ortho and Med-Surg rotation."

"Hi I'm Young and Cocky NEURO SURGEON who went to pre-med at Prestigious University, med-school at More Prestigious University and residency at Even Better/Big City University Hopital (and you will all bow down and kiss my feet which walk on water)."

(Crickets)

I felt sorry for all who followed that one.

Your Turtle Neck Looks As Ridiculous As You Do

Why is it that when you're out having a good time with friends that you have to run into someone who you truly dislike? I can stand many, but this person makes my skin crawl. Ugh. I realized why I disliked them all over again. Not only that, but they were wearing a mock turtle neck. LMAO Who wears those anymore? I am glad they were wearing that incredibly stupid looking turtle neck when I saw them and that I am a much smarter person now than I was then. Hallelujah for insight!

Cheers! :)

Into The Great Wide Open

I woke up this morning in a cold sweat. I'd had one of my plane crash dreams again. Oy! These dreams have haunted me since I was five or six, for what reason, I'm not sure. I didn't even step into an airplane until I was 12, and that was to take a quick trip with my uncle, who piloted the plane, to the state capitol. So it wasn't as though I was a frequent child flyer, but the nightmares still came. You can imagine my apprehension when I would step onto a plane and leave my life in the hands of a complete stranger flying a big tin can 30,000 feet above the earth. Call my nightmares what you will, but something always nagged at me, instincts perhaps? I always wondered if it was a premonition, a warning sign. Maybe I was just Patsy Cline in my past life. Who knows.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, I am completely fascinated with airplanes. If I see or hear one overhead, I have to look at it. It's just another one of my obsessive compulsive rituals, such as having to read every damn sign I pass on the interstate. Only on the interstate? Yes, only on the interstate. It's a seriously annoying habit and I know it's incredibly weird. Thank you very much.

I have always looked at airplanes and wondered who was in them? Where are they going and why? I'd judge the direction of the plane and always try to guess where they were headed and once even went so far as to look it up on the airplane radar. LOL Don't laugh at me. Anyhow, airplanes just aren't natural. If we were meant to fly, we would have wings. I hear the statistics, I know they are relatively safe. You have a better chance of dying in a car crash, blah, blah, malarkey, blah. Statistics aside, if you have a fear of flying, none of those statistics matter.

As I grew older I did fly quite frequently and every time I (reluctantly) stepped on a plane my nightmares came to mind. Is this the day I'm going to die? Is my seat partner's number up? If his number is up, that means I am going to die with him and that's just not fair! Humphf! However, I was good at ignoring those nagging voice in my head and irrational thoughts. I knew I was being ridiculous. Here I was thinking we may crash and burn and the guy next to me is practically licking his free peanut bag and slurping his bloody mary with the celery sticking out. Talk about reality check. I was fully aware of my unhealthy mental sparring and would find a way to shove it to the darkest recesses of my mind, usually with vodka.

I always avoided the seat that had the exit door, incase I suddenly freaked the F out and decided to grab the big red handle and scream "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!" Not that I ever would, mind you, but just like imagining a roller coaster flying off it's rails, I let my imagination get away with me. Heh. Yea, I don't like those exit doors, or what's on the other side of them....nothing.

Not that my heightened imagination or dreams are completely unwarranted. I have had some bad flight experiences, as many have had. I have only flown with other people twice, but mostly I've always been alone for some reason or another. Once I was by myself on a 757 and the woman sitting next to me (in the aisle seat) was very large. VERY. LARGE. My first thought was that incase of an emergency, I was f'cked! How would I ever get around her? How would she ever even get out of the seat that she is now wedged in possibly forever? Not only was she a hefty lady, but she was also apparently an emotional basket case. (NO JUDGEMENT!) I am able to hide my fear behind my bloodshot eyes, but she didn't drink and lordy, did I want to hand her one! It was one of those situations where we sat on the runway for hours before we could take off and the longer we sat there the more she cried. Now I may be afraid to fly, but a big ole cry baby I am not. This woman was shaking the row she was sobbing so hard. Who knew you could have turbulence and not even be off the ground? She kept praying and stating she didn't want to die and the longer this went on the more annoyed and nervous she made me! Hell, she even had the baby crying across the aisle. I had one of those mental scenarios where I would grab her by her huge shoulders and shake the shit out of her and follow it up with a good , hard slap! "Get a hold of yourself WOMAN!" And yes, at that time, I really did want to jump out of the exit door, or cry right along with her.

Another experience I had, was a short flight in a little puddle jumper in the middle of an ice storm at night. Perfect conditions for flying around in the air, ain't it? Coincidentally enough, I was THE ONLY PERSON ON THE PLANE! Well, that's it! If I am the only one on here, then that must mean I'm the only idiot dumb enough to fly, therefore, my time is up. Sianara sweet world. Yea, I'm totally rational. Wink.

The pilots were very friendly and even let me wear the headphones for reassurance, like I was a little kid. I would have preferred not to wear them, as all I heard for a solid hour was ice, ice, and more ice. The pilots kept telling me it was all normal and we were fine and that they were de-icing the plane. I could see the de-icing of the wings when the little lights would flash and light up the snowy night. Calm my nerves, it did not. They would turn around frequently and smile at me. I wanted to tell them to keep their eyes on the damn road, and not the crazy eyed lady sitting behind them with a fake smile plastered on her face.

I thought flying was suppose to be a serene experience. Floating through big puffy white clouds toward a gorgeous amber sunset. Not a jarring, fist clenching, hit your head on the luggage bin, off road experience. This was probably the worst flight I had ever been on and the most scared I had ever been as well. I have never flown in such horrible turbulence or conditions and was white knuckling the arm rests to death. I actually got very nauseous too, which never happens. I felt as though we were popcorn kernels in a hot frying pan. We were all over the place. I'd never been so happy to reach the ground, ever.

Back to this nightmare that started this whole blog. In my dream, I was boarding a plane and the pilot winked at me. I wondered why he'd done that, then as I took my seat he kept staring at me with this "I know something you don't know" look in his eye. Of course it's my dream, so NO ONE else noticed any odd behavior. Pfft! The plane was full of business men in suits, looking all too self important and for some reason I had a big red coat on. Hmm. I kept noticing these stares from the flight staff, but tried to ignore it. All was relatively normal until the flight attendant asked me if I wanted something to drink. As I looked at her to answer, she also winked at me and smiled that knowing smile. Who are these people? Zombies? Robots? The Stepford Crew? I asked her why everyone was smiling at me and she didn't answer. Then the dream skips ahead to later and I am squeezing into the bathroom and on the wall was a lever that said "DO NOT PULL!". Well, that's like asking me not to touch my hot plate, so I pull it and damnit if there isn't a whole big ass room in the back of the plane and it was full of red coats. TWILIGHT ZONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Instinctively, I knew something fishy was going on. I didn't know if they were going to snatch my coat, or my body. (Dreams are weird). I was caught in the coat closet by the flighty flight attendant from earlier and she wasn't smiling this time, she looked panicky and told me in a strained voice to 'take my seat and buckle up'. Turbulence was getting worse and I fell a few times on my way back. The plane's nose kept dipping and diving and I knew something was terribly wrong. I knew we were going to crash and that was it for me. I never made it back to my set, because I woke up, but the feelings that dream produced are always the same ones....terror. I knew I was going to die and was going to fall a long way before I did. Ugh. LOL I still can't figure out the freaky red coat room. Damn, I have some bizarre dreams.

Needless to say, flying is a fear, but it's not one to keep me from going somewhere, if I MUST, but I have always wondered if my fears are from instinct or complete and utter irrationality. Don't even get me started on 9/11. That mess had me wracked with horror. So, what are your phobias and fears?

An Open Book

Broken ~ Lifehouse

The broken clock is a comfort, it helps me sleep tonight
Maybe it can stop tomorrow from stealing all my time
I am here still waiting though i still have my doubts
I am damaged at best, like you've already figured out

I'm falling apart, I'm barely breathing
With a broken heart that's still beating
In the pain, there is healing
In your name I find meaning
So I'm holdin' on, I'm holdin' on, I'm holdin' on
I'm barely holdin' on to you

The broken locks were a warning you got inside my head
I tried my best to be guarded, I'm an open book instead
I still see your reflection inside of my eyes
That are looking for a purpose, they're still looking for life

I'm falling apart, I'm barely breathing
with a broken heart that's still beating
In the pain (in the pain), is there healing
In your name (in your name) I find meaning
So I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'), I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'), I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin')
I'm barely holdin' on to you

I'm hangin' on another day
Just to see what you throw my way
And I'm hanging on to the words you say
You said that I will be OK

The broken lights on the freeway left me here alone
I may have lost my way now, haven't forgotten my way home

I'm falling apart, I'm barely breathing
with a broken heart that's still beating
In the pain(In the pain) there is healing
In your name I find meaning
So I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'), I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'), I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'),
I'm barely holdin' on to you

I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'), I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'), I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'),
I'm barely holdin' on to you

Ain't No Sunshine

American Idol was good last night. Anoop, Megan and Micheal all need to go. Anoop has a nice voice, but I don't really want to see someone sing Usher's 'Caught Up' on AI. Ugh! Scott was actually good last night, but let's face it, the kid is NO American Idol, not compared to the competition. Oh, I almost forgot about Lil Rounds, that is how invisible she is.

Of course Danny was really good, but was it just me or did that arrangement confuse others too? It was distracting. Also, I thought he yelled the song a lot. Little Allison is a powerhouse, even though she did look like an emo queen, Adam sang the hell out of Play That Funky Music (I can't believe he chose that song, but he rocked it). I use to like Matt Giraud, however, I agree with the judges, he needs to stick to a style...he's a bi-polar calamity...from Ray Charles to The Fray??? Who the heck are ya Matt?

My favorite of the night......drum roll...... Kris Allen! Wow, he was awesome and I think this was my favorite performance so far this season!!! I knew I loved him, but he always slid under the radar for some reason. Of course, next to Danny's velvety soul-ridden voice and Adam's flamboyant high notes, anyone could get lost. Kris is my favorite type of artist, a little folksy, artistic, Mraz-ish and this week he PROVED just how creative and talented he really is. How he changed up that song was genius. I would buy it if it were a single. I was totally vibing with that song. When the band reached that crescendo I could feel the song rising and Kris TURNED IT OUT! Sing it boy! I loved the incorporation of the strings with the rock and blues jam of the song. I think it's the first time I ever really noticed Ricky Minor and the band. They were awesome!

I can't believe how many really good singers, musicians and performers there are this year. The competition is definitely heating up! Watch Kris's amazing performance HERE!

Grateful =)

Sometimes all a woman really needs is coffee talk with a good friend. I love my friend Ravin for being my soul sista. She is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. There is no one else who knows me better or can make me laugh till I cry :)
I'm just glad she made it through the accident and is still with us today.
